Right after your braces or aligners come off, you’ll typically wear your retainer all day except for meals and brushing. Over time, most patients switch to wearing it only at night. Your orthodontist will give you a personalized schedule to keep your teeth from shifting.

Removable Retainers (Essix or Hawley) can be taken out for meals and cleaning, making them convenient but easier to lose or damage if not stored properly.
‍Fixed Retainers (bonded wires) stay attached to the back of your teeth, requiring no removal or replacement. However, you’ll need to be extra diligent with brushing and flossing around the wire.

Gently brush removable retainers every day with a soft toothbrush and mild soap or toothpaste. Avoid hot water, which can warp the plastic. For fixed retainers, use floss threaders or water flossers to reach under the wire. Proper cleaning prevents plaque buildup and odors.

This can happen if you haven’t worn it as prescribed or if your teeth have shifted slightly. Contact our office right away. We’ll assess whether we can adjust your current retainer or if you need a new one.

Minor shifts can occur over time due to natural aging and everyday oral pressures. However, consistent retainer wear drastically reduces the likelihood of any significant movement that would affect your smile’s appearance.

Most retainers last several years with proper care, but normal wear and tear—cracks, warping, or buildup—may prompt a replacement. Visit our office for periodic evaluations to ensure your retainer still fits comfortably and securely.
