Protect Your Beautiful Smile

Retainers & Aftercare for Long-Lasting Results

Why Retainers Matter

Congratulations! You’ve worked hard to achieve your new, straight smile. But the journey doesn’t end once your braces or aligners come off. Retainers help keep your teeth in their new positions, ensuring your smile stays perfectly aligned for years to come.

Benefits of Retainers

Keep Your Smile in Place

After braces or aligner treatment, teeth tend to shift back. Retainers help maintain your new alignment, ensuring all that effort doesn’t go to waste.

Protect Your Investment

Orthodontic care requires time, money, and commitment. Wearing a retainer preserves those results, keeping your teeth from reverting to previous positions.

Support Overall Oral Health

Properly aligned teeth are easier to clean, reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease. Retainers help maintain that alignment and the health benefits that come with it.

Provide Lasting Confidence

A well-maintained, straight smile can boost your self-esteem for years to come. Retainers give you the peace of mind that your smile will stay bright and beautiful.

Keeping Your Retainer in Top Shape

1

Daily Cleaning

Use a soft toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste or mild soap. Avoid hot water, as it can distort the plastic.
2

Consistent Wear

Initially, you may need to wear your removable retainer full-time (except for eating or brushing). Over time, you’ll likely switch to night-only wear.
3

Safe Storage

Always store your retainer in its protective case when not in use to prevent loss or damage.
4

Avoid Heat & Chemicals

Keep retainers away from direct sunlight, hot surfaces, and strong chemicals to maintain their shape.

FAQ

How long do I have to wear my retainer?

Right after your braces or aligners come off, you’ll typically wear your retainer all day except for meals and brushing. Over time, most patients switch to wearing it only at night. Your orthodontist will give you a personalized schedule to keep your teeth from shifting.

What’s the difference between removable and fixed retainers?

Removable Retainers (Essix or Hawley) can be taken out for meals and cleaning, making them convenient but easier to lose or damage if not stored properly.
Fixed Retainers (bonded wires) stay attached to the back of your teeth, requiring no removal or replacement. However, you’ll need to be extra diligent with brushing and flossing around the wire.

How do I clean and care for my retainer?

Gently brush removable retainers every day with a soft toothbrush and mild soap or toothpaste. Avoid hot water, which can warp the plastic. For fixed retainers, use floss threaders or water flossers to reach under the wire. Proper cleaning prevents plaque buildup and odors.

What happens if my retainer doesn’t fit anymore?

This can happen if you haven’t worn it as prescribed or if your teeth have shifted slightly. Contact our office right away. We’ll assess whether we can adjust your current retainer or if you need a new one.

Can my teeth still shift even if I wear my retainer?

Minor shifts can occur over time due to natural aging and everyday oral pressures. However, consistent retainer wear drastically reduces the likelihood of any significant movement that would affect your smile’s appearance.

Will I need to replace my retainer eventually?

Most retainers last several years with proper care, but normal wear and tear—cracks, warping, or buildup—may prompt a replacement. Visit our office for periodic evaluations to ensure your retainer still fits comfortably and securely.

I lost my retainer. What should I do?

Contact us as soon as possible to arrange a replacement. The longer you go without wearing a retainer, the higher the chance your teeth may shift back toward their original positions, jeopardizing your treatment results.
